Course objectives

This course will focus on the organization and regulation of cell process, from the molecular to the system0 level. The aim of this course is giving to biotechnologists the fundamental knowledge of the main biological processes at cellular and subcellular levels. In particular, the course will provide the tools to translate these skills in both pre-clinical and clinical diagnostic technologies.

Results of learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student should know:

  • organization of the cell, organelles and related endomembranes;
  • mechanisms of molecular regulations in eukaryotic organisms, focusing on the human being, with a specific attention to their alteration in pathologic conditions.
  • regulations of the protein processing, trafficking and sorting;
  • regulation of cellular metabolism and energy.

By the analysis of current scientific literature, the student will also learn how to use these skills for the development of new cell-based diagnostic tools in specific contexts.

Course delivery

The course will consist of a series of introductory lectures, using power point slides, which will be made available to the students.  The students will also receive the relevant bibliography, which will be useful to prepare their own presentations which will be discussed during the second part of the course and will be centered on the most important topics, chosen with the help of the Professors. The active participation at the discussion is strongly encouraged.

Learning assessment methods

Each student will provide an oral presentation (max 30 min), using power point slides, in which the most recent scientific articles, from a list proposed also by the teacher, will be discussed together. The students are invited to start their presentation with an adequate introduction. After the oral presentation there will be a session of questions based on the principal topics of the course. This presentation will provide a bonus (1 score max.) for the exam.

The exam will consist of a written test including 4 open questions (score from 0 to 7 according to the accuracy of the answer) and 4 multiple choice questions (score 1).

Specifically, will be evaluated the capability to discuss in depth and properly the main topics of the course, including also logic, reasoning ability, criticism, quality of the exposure and the appropriateness in the use of scientific terminology.
