Course objectives
Cell Biology
This course will focus on the techniques related to the evaluation or several cellular processes, from the molecular to the system level. The course aims to familiarize students with key technologies and methodological principles of cell physiological parameters determination and how to apply these tools in both pre-clinical and clinical diagnostic technologies.
Molecular Biology
The course will focus on the experimental technologies originating from the most advanced molecular biology knoweldge, thus providing the tools to translate the identification of molecular mechanisms in both pre-clinical and clinical diagnostic approaches.

Results of learning outcomes
Cell Biology
At the end of the course, the students will have acquired skills that allow them to critically read papers in the field of cellular biology and to join groups working in this field. By the analysis of current scientific literature, the student will also learn how to use these skills for the development of new cell-based diagnostic tools in specific contexts.
In particular, with reference to the Dublin Indicators, the students will have pursued and reached the targets reported below.
Knowledge and understanding: at the end of the course of Cellular Biology, the students will have acquired the fundamental concepts of cellular processes and structures and will be able to discuss the subject. Particular care will be given to the correct use of the technical language.
Knowledge application: the course equips the students with the tools to analyse and evaluate various cellular mechanisms and their roles in biological systems. Students are encouraged to read scientific papers, and the reading comprehension is constantly checked.
Communication skills: the course leads to the acquisition of the technical language that allows the students to communicate internationally with specialists in the field of cellular biology using a formally correct language.
In particular, at the end of the course, the student should know the following techniques/assays to evaluate:
- cell proliferation, cell survival, cytotoxicity.
- protein processing, subcellular localization, trafficking and sorting;
- cell metabolism and energy.
Molecular Biology
At the end of the course, the student should have a deep knowledge of:
- Advanced molecular technologies to manipulate DNA structure and gene expression.
- Advanced molecular technologies exploiting nucleic acids and protein biochemical and biological properties for pre-clinical and clinical diagnostic technologies.
- Avanced sequencing technologies to identify diagnostic biomarkers
- Multi-omic approaches in precision medicine
- Engineered biosensors as biomarkers in teragnostics
In addition the students will acquire skills in the analysis of current scientific literature, and learn how to use these skills for the development of new cell-based diagnostic tools in specific contexts.

Course delivery
Cell Biology
The course will consist of a series of introductory lectures, using power point slides, which will be made available to the students. The students will also receive the relevant bibliography, which will be useful to prepare their own presentations which will be discussed during the second module of the course and will be centered on the most important topics, chosen with the help of the Professor. The active participation at the discussion is strongly encouraged.
Additionaly, each student will provide an oral presentation (max 30 min), using power point slides, in which the most recent scientific articles, from a list proposed also by the teacher, will be discussed together. The students are invited to start their presentation with an adequate introduction. After the oral presentation there will be a session of questions based on the principal topics of the course. This presentation will provide a bonus (1 score max.) for the exam.

Learning assessment methods
Cell Biology
The exam will consist of a written test including 4 open questions (score from 0 to 7 according to the accuracy of the answer) and 4 multiple choice questions (score 1).
Specifically, will be evaluated the capability to discuss in depth and properly the main topics of the course, including also logic, reasoning ability, criticism, quality of the exposure and the appropriateness in the use of scientific terminology.

Molecular Biology
Learning of the curricular module will be assayed through an written exam followed by an optional oral assessment, on the subjects and literature discussed during the course.
